25/08/2009 - Abseiling for Animals!

Earlier this month, 15 daring individuals took on the Big Drop raising money for animals in need at RSPCA Bristol Branch & Bristol Dogs and Cats Home.

On 8th August, dedicated volunteers ranging in age from 20 to 67 years old took on the charity’s Abseiling Challenge down Bristol’s Avon Gorge, going over the edge for animals in need! Volunteers included one of the Charity’s Trustees, Lyn Slocombe; Clinic Nurse, Elaine Grierson; Dogs Home Animal Carer, Laura Nicholls and Branch Administrator, Alice Cooper.abseiling team members

This leap into the unknown was organized to raise much needed funds for animals in need at the Bristol charity and thanks to the hard work of all the participants and the generosity of their friends and family a staggering sum totaling over £3,000 was raised from the event!

The weather was glorious for the event although for some participants the weather was the furthest thing from their minds. Natalie Bailey, 31 said “I saw the poster advertising the abseil while dog walking at the Home. I’m terrified of heights but wanted to do something challenging to support the animals at the Home. I hoped this would open doors to trying other adventurous activities…it didn’t! I never thought I could loose control of my entire body like that, I was trembling uncontrollably with fear! However, it was a great experience and I’m very glad I took part.”

Natalie, releaved to be on solid ground!Natalie was also the very worthy recipient of a meal for two, kindly donated by Café Rouge on Park Street, Bristol, for raising the most sponsorship for the RSPCA Bristol Branch & Bristol Dogs and Cats Home. Natalie raised a massive £501.77 including Gift Aid.

Jill Roynon, Fundraising Manager said “We are delighted with Natalie for working so hard to raise this money and to all of our abseiling team that overcame personal challenges and raised amazing amounts of money for the animals in our care. Without the support of our volunteers and donors we would not be able to continue our important work giving animals in need the chance for a brighter future, free from pain or neglect.”

RSPCA Bristol Branch is made up of the RSPCA Bristol Animal Clinic and Bristol Dogs and Cats Home. The RSPCA Animal Clinic treats over 12,000 animals a year and provides a 24 hour veterinary service for lost, sick and injured stray animals, subsidised veterinary treatment for people on a low income, a first aid centre for wildlife casualties and ‘well dog’ clinics for the animals of homeless people.

Bristol Dogs & Cats Home, an integral part of the RSPCA Bristol & District Branch, provides care, shelter and a re-homing service for nearly 2,000 unwanted dogs, cats and small animals every year. Together these charities give thousands of local animals in need a second chance for a happy life, free from pain or neglect.

With so many animals to care for the charity’s annual running costs exceed £1.4 million. Both the RSPCA Clinic and the Dogs & Cats Home are independent from the National RSPCA and receives no funding from the National Charity, Government or the Lottery. We therefore rely on the support from the community through donations, legacies and fundraising events to continue our important work.
