Staff and Volunteers at Bristol Dogs and Cats Home are appealing to the public to support their Small Furry Appeal.
Unlike the name suggests, Bristol Dogs & Cats Home also cares for over 70 unwanted & neglected small animals including rabbits, ferrets, rats, chinchillas and many different birds. The Charity, based in St. Philips, Bristol, is currently planning vital works to re-develop their Small Animal Accommodation, increasing the size of the pens to provide a higher standard of care for the animals during their stay.
Jill Roynon, Fundraising Manager at the Home said, “Small animals are often overlooked and misunderstood. They do not always make ideal pets for young children. As with all animals, they require commitment and regular attention for as long as they live, which can be up to 15 years. Unfortunately many end up in rescue centres like ours because people take on these animals without knowing the facts.”
“Size doesn’t matter! Small doesn’t mean insignificant. Just like you they can feel pain, fear, frustration and loneliness. Did you know a rabbit needs as much exercise as a small dog? For many small animals their life consists of being trapped in a small box, 24 hours a day with no company or stimulation! Most people would be appalled to see a Jack Russell shut in a hutch, visited once or twice a day with food, but would they look twice if it was a rabbit?”
Plans for the new accommodation will also allow greater accessibility to potential adopters, providing the best possible chance of being re-homed quickly, creating space for other small animals in need.
Jill Continued, “We desperately need your help to raise the £106,000 required for this essential new development! We know times are hard for everyone, indeed the demand for our services have increased whilst our income has been reduced, but every penny really does count. Together we can make a BIG difference to the lives of our SMALL furry friends.”
Bristol Dogs & Cats Home, an integral part of the RSPCA Bristol & District Branch, provides care, shelter and a re-homing service for nearly 2,000 unwanted dogs, cats and small animals every year, giving them a second chance for a happy life, free from pain or neglect..jpg)
With so many animals to care for the Branch’s annual running costs exceed £1.4 million. Both the RSPCA Bristol Animal Clinic and the Dogs & Cats Home are independent from the National RSPCA and receive no funding from the National Charity, Government or the Lottery.
